Helen Craske (3rd year French D.Phil.) has won the 2019 R. Gapper Postgraduate Essay prize, awarded by the Society for French Studies, for her essay ‘Periodicals as Proxénètes: Erotic Complicity in Don Juan (1895-1900)’. The judges described it as ‘excellent, original and elegant; a very sophisticated and masterful essay, the prose style engaging and fluent’.

The award includes a cash prize of £750, expenses-paid travel to the next annual conference of the Society for French Studies, and citation in the French Studies Bulletin and on the Society's website.
