Members of the Portuguese sub-faculty were delighted to meet the new Portuguese Ambassador to the UK, his Excellency Nuno Brito, during his recent visit to Oxford on Wednesday 25 May 2022.
The Ambassador was accompanied by the Director of Camões Institute in the UK, Dr. Regina Duarte. He was formally welcomed by the Chair of the Faculty, Almut Suerbaum, and the King John II Professor of Portuguese Studies, Phillip Rothwell.
The visit begun in the Taylorian with an exhibition of books produced by members of the sub-faculty, organized by Joanne Ferrari, the Librarian-in-Charge. This was followed by a prize-giving ceremony, during which the Ambassador presented students with awards for best results in the Prelim and FHS (the Phillipa of Lancaster; Stephen Parkinson, and T.F.Earle prizes respectively). The event concluded with the launch of Anticlericalismo e Feminismo na Imprensa Oitocentista: os artigos de fundo de Francisca de Assis Martins Wood, edited by Cláudia Pazos Alonso.
During the drinks reception afterwards, the Ambassador had the opportunity to talk informally with a range of students, staff and friends of the sub-faculty, before leaving for a dinner with the Vice-Chancellor.
