I completed the MSt in Modern Languages at Oxford in the academic year 2022-2023, specialising in nineteenth-century literature, both poetry and prose. Prior to that, I did my undergraduate studies in French and English literature at King's College London from 2018-2022. I am generally interested in Romanticism and its relationship with Catholicism and religious syncretism. In 2023, I began my DPhil studying theories of regeneration (i.e. resurrection, reincarnation, palingenesis and metempsychosis) in post-revolutionary French writing. My project examines how different writers reacted to the spiritual vacuum the French Revolution left in its wake, and the influence of eighteenth-century esoteric thought on conceptions of the soul. My corpus encompasses philosophical writing, as well as essays, short stories, novellas and poetry; notable writers include Joseph de Maistre, Pierre-Simon Ballanche, Charles Nodier, Honoré de Balzac, Théophile Gautier, Gerard de Nerval, George Sand and Victor Hugo.
