My research explores the representation of risk in epic literature of medieval Spain where, much like today, risk plays a major role in the way a world beset by uncertainty, violence, disease, and war was understood and explained. Risk is widely theorised but studies fail to account for the contribution of literature and storytelling to our understanding of risk. This book will be the first to examine the key role that risk plays in the epic genre, what those risks consist of, and how epic tales inform our broader understanding of risk as a nexus of human experience.
