Menorcans

Menorcans from Algeria: from the 19th century to the present day by Marta Marfany (Pompeu Fabra University).

In this talk we will present the history of the Minorcans who, following the French occupation of the city of Algiers in 1830, formed part of the European migratory flow to Algeria. The Minorcan presence in Algeria was strong enough to preserve and transmit to later generations their own language and culture. The writer Albert Camus, of Minorcan descent, bears witness to this.

We will also review literary samples written in Catalan in Algeria in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and current novels focused on this historical event, such as El país de l'altra riba by Maite Salord (Proa Award 2021).

The event will take place in Catalan.
