For the 200th anniversary of Gustave Flaubert’s birth, the Oxford Cake Shop is making Madame Bovary’s Wedding Cake in real-life, edible form.
If you have an interest in Flaubert, his novel Madame Bovary, and/or literary cakes, you are welcome to attend the unveiling of the cake on 15th November 2021, 12-1.00pm, in front of the Cake Shop in Oxford’s Covered Market. The cake will then be displayed in the window for two weeks.
Making Madame Bovary’s Wedding Cake is a project by TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities) bringing together the Oxford Cake Shop and Prof. Jennifer Yee’s research on how Flaubert introduces kitsch into the novel. For more details on the project see TORCH's blog.
