The British Comparative Literature Association (BCLA) has announced the results of the 2022 Arthur Terry Postgraduate Essay Prize for an essay on a comparative topic written by a master's student. Han Hu (胡涵), who has just graduated with Distinction from St Edmund Hall, was awarded 1st prize for her essay ‘Centres on the Margin and the Doubly Marginalised’, which offers an original and unique perspective on the much-studied topic of cultural ‘centres’ and ‘margins’ by focusing on Chinese and Portuguese literatures, with a particular emphasis on Macao.
Han's winning essay was submitted for the MSt Method Option ‘Spaces of Comparison’, convened by Dr Karolina Watroba (All Souls College). Han joins three previous Oxford students who won prizes in the Arthur Terry competition in 2020 and 2021 for essays submitted for this module. All prize-winning entries have been published on the BCLA website.
