Sean Wyer, Stipendiary Lecturer in Italian at Balliol College, has been awarded the prestigious Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship. The fellowship, funded by the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, awards $30,000 to support recipients in their final year of dissertation writing. Sean, who received his undergraduate degree in Modern Languages at Oxford in 2014, is currently working remotely from the UK as he completes his PhD in Italian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

The fellowship is the largest award for doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences whose work investigates questions of ethical and religious values in interesting, original, or significant ways. Since its formation in 1981, the fellowship has supported over 1,300 PhD scholars.
