The Russian Sub-Faculty alongside the Vintage Film Club is very pleased to continue the Russian classic film series as part of the European Humanities Research Centre Visibility Project. The project aims to introduce film adaptations of Russian classical literature to students in connection with the FHS course in Russian (Papers VIII and X). Also, anyone interested in Russian literature and language is welcome.
In Trinity Term, three film adaptations preceded by short introductory commentaries by experts in Russian literature and film studies will be shown.
- 4 May (Week 2) Fathers and Sons based on the novel by Ivan Turgenev, directed by Adolf Bergunker, Natalya Rashevskaya (1958)
- 18 May (Week 4) A Gentle Creature based on the short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, directed by Aleksandr Borisov (1960)
- 1 June (Week 6) Lights based on short stories by Anton Chekhov, directed by Solomon Shuster (1984)
All screenings take place at 5 pm in the Main Lecture Hall, Taylor Institution, St Giles’, Oxford OX1 3NA.
The films will be shown in Russian with English subtitles. The subtitles are provided by Vintage Film Club, an online film distribution platform, which hosts introductory talks by Sub-Faculty members and students and other accompanying material to provide cultural and historical context to the films.
