'Apud Basileam' traces the printing history in Basel from the beginnings of printing in the city around 1470 to the end of the 1520s, when Basel went through the Protestant Reformation. Curated based on the Taylor Institution Library historical holdings, the exhibition includes highlights such as an edition of Sebastian Brant’s 'Varia Carmina', the 1518 edition of Thomas More’s 'Utopia', as well as a number of Martin Luther’s Reformation pamphlets. The exhibition by Alyssa Steiner (MSt in Modern Languages 2018) is part of the coursework for the Method Option ‘History of the Book’. Watch out for serpent-women, fools riding lobsters, bookworms, and dancing skeletons!
