The January 8th attack against the three branches of government in the Brazilian capital is still affecting the country. We invited Brad Haynes, Brazil Bureau Chief for Reuters, and Natalia Viana, co-founder of Pública, one of the most important independent news agencies in the country, to discuss the events of January 8th and their implications for Brazil’s future.
Speakers:
Brad Haynes is the Brazil Bureau Chief for Reuters. He has been a correspondent in Brazil since 2011; previously, he was the agency’s Chilean correspondent. With stints at the Associated Press (AP) and The Wall Street Journal, Haynes has covered important events in Brazil such as the 2016 Olympics, the 2014 World Cup, and the 2014 and 2018 presidential elections.
Natalia Viana is co-founder and executive director of Agência Pública. She is the author and co-author of five books, such as the recently-published Dano Colateral, about the return of the military to Brazilian politics (Objetiva, 2021). As a reporter and editor, she has won several awards, more recently the Vladimir Herzog Human Rights Award in 2022.
