Week 7, 25th February - 1st March
Brazil Week aims to raise awareness about the richness and diversity of Brazilian culture by organising a number of free events open not only to students and academics, but also to the general public. It celebrates the fact that there are so many academics and students at the University of Oxford who are working in and on Brazil (from areas as wide-ranging as Literature, Politics, Anthropology, Environmental Science, Linguistics and Ethnomusicology), and to bring them together. It also functions to introduce the culture and society of Brazil to those who are interested. It facilitates interaction between the University and the public – including the approximately 4,000 Brazilians living in Oxford. Over the past three years, the event has attracted people from other universities, cities and even countries.
This year, highlights include a bossa nova concert celebrating the life and work of Vinicius de Morais, a short-film premiere (plus Q&A via skype with the director), and a round table on Cultural Mediation featuring Helena Gasparian (Cultural Counsellor, Brazilian Embassy in London), Juliana Iootty (BBC Brasil), Yuka Igarashi (Granta Magazine) and Stefan Tobler (translator and independent publisher).
The week culminates in a film symposium on "Brazil From Inside and Outside" with a keynote paper by Stephanie Dennison (University of Leeds) and a party launching the carnival-themed, student-run arts magazine Misc.
Brazil Week is organised by members and students of the Sub-Faculty of Portuguese (Modern Languages Faculty), the only independent department of Portuguese in the UK.
