Today the UK funding bodies have published the results of the UK’s most recent national research assessment exercise, the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. Research from the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages was submitted to Unit of Assessment 26A.
In UOA 26A, 42% of the submission was judged to be 4*, the highest score available, for research quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance, and rigour. That is significantly higher than the 27% of 4* submissions in 2014.
Professor Almut Suerbaum, chair of the Faculty Board, commented: “This result reflects the contributions of all colleagues, and I would like to thank everyone, from researchers to the research support team, for their extraordinary work in making this possible.”
The submission highlights the range and depth of our research, including 108 colleagues and representing all stages of a research career. It comprises 68 monographs and 11 scholarly editions in more than ten different languages and on cultures across the world.
