Congratulations to current MSt in Comparative Literature and Critical Translation student, Reuben Woolley, who has translated the book 'Jimi Hendrix Live in Lviv' by Andrey Kurkov. The book has also been added to the longlist for the Booker Prize 2023.
The novel is an affectionate portrait of one of Ukraine's (and the world's) most intriguing and cosmopolitan cities. It follows an assortment of characters through Lviv's subcultures and underworlds, mixing the real and the fictional to explore a complex blend of history and culture.
Reuben, who previously was an undergraduate student in English and Russian at Wadham (2021) says: “I am delighted for my first project to have been longlisted for the International Booker, as well as more than a little surprised! The book comes out in early April; to have been nominated for such a prestigious award before publication date is a real confidence boost, and I hope it brings more readers to discover Ukrainian literature and culture in general, and Kurkov’s rich catalogue in particular.”
