Somerville College

The Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages holds an annual conference for teachers of Modern Languages. This conference is known as the ‘Sir Robert Taylor Society Conference’, after Sir Robert Taylor (1714 – 1788), whose generous bequest allowed for the construction of the Taylor Institution Modern Languages Library.

The 2019 conference will be held at Somerville College on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 September. Highlights of the programme this year include: a roundtable on languages in performance; a talk on ‘Marie Antoinette and Objects’; a literary session on ‘Points of View’, where scholars in French, German, Spanish, and Italian will discuss narrative voice and perspective in a selection of texts on the A Level syllabus; a ‘Building Bridges’ session, designed as a forum for dialogue between teachers and the university; and advice about admissions. A full programme and details about booking are available here. Generous bursaries are available for teachers from the maintained sector, and we would be delighted to welcome all teachers with an interest in the programme.
