Benjamin Hoffmann is a creative writer and a Professor of French (The Ohio State University) specialising in eighteenth-century French literature and philosophy. His récits and novels include Père et fils (Gallimard, 2011), American Pandemonium (Gallimard, 2016), L'Île de la Sentinelle (Gallimard, 2022; Sentinel Island, transl. Alan J. Singerman, Liverpool UP, 2024) and, last month, Les Minuscules. He is also the author of the monograph L'Amérique posthume. Réinventions littéraires de l'Amérique à la fin du XVIIIe siècle (Classiques Garnier, 2019) and the essay Les Paradoxes de la postérité (Minuit, 2019).
Résumé: Consacrée au dernier ouvrage publié du vivant de Giacomo Casanova, À Léonard Snetlage (1797), cette présentation explorera le paradoxe d’un écrivain francophone qui revendique son droit à l’innovation dans le domaine linguistique tout en s’érigeant en censeur des évolutions survenues dans la langue française à partir de 1789.
This talk is part of a two-part event on "Langue française et Révolution", organised by Jessica Goodman. Benjamin Hoffmann will be joined by Professor Olivier Ritz (Université Paris Cité), who will give a paper entitled "La langue à l’envers? Jean-François Laharpe, l’histoire littéraire et la Révolution". The talk will be held in Lodge Seminar Room AB2.
